From hard hats to guitar straps
Matt Vandermus, lead singer in the band Who Knows, came to the Torch office looking for a way to promote his band and their upcoming shows. I offered to write a feature on them.

This is one of my favorite articles I have written. Cole McGowen was a senior at Ferris when I interviewed him. What made him special was the fact that he started his own farm.

Dr. Mark Young is a pharmacy teacher at Ferris. Young also runs Mecosta Winery with his wife. I got to learn the science side of wine and how COVID has affected their local business.

I wrote this article for our special insert about Women’s Month in the Torch. Sadie Prettinger and Hannah Price talked about their experience in being construction management majors and having to work through obstacles of being in a predominately male profession.

This article started as a feature story for one of my journalism classes. I did a more in depth look of what the TDMP program at Ferris looks like.

Tiana Halfaday’s story followed on the next page. Halfaday is a Ferris student who lived on a reservation before coming to campus. Halfaday goes through her journey of reconnecting with her family heritage by dancing at powwows.
News

2 Broke Girls = 1 successful woman
Whitney Cummings came to Ferris in September as the Homecoming comedian. I got the pleasure to talk to her about what it is like being a women in the comedy industry.

Ferris community demands support for Indigenous Peoples’ Day
This was my first news type article. Ferris had Columbus Day on the calendar but didn’t have Indigenous People’s Day. I emailed Eisler, our president, asking why it wasn’t there along with some professors I knew who were fighting for recognition of IPD.
Opinions

Every year at the Torch we are expected to write an opinion. All the opinions I have wrote before this one were silly, like which streaming service is the best for college kids or why marching band should be considered a sport. This opinion took me outside of my comfort zone because I talked about a real issue I face- not knowing if I want to have a child even though everything points to me going into mother hood.
